LEDs prevail in all areas of lighting technology and successively displace conventional incandescent and halogen lights. The advantages of LEDs are obvious: The spectrum of light as well as the color temperature can be varied individually, resulting in a better quality of light. The energy consumption of LEDs is much lower than that of conventional halogen lights and delivers the same brightness, which ultimately results in an up to 6x longer life. Lower power consumption also means significantly longer battery life for battery-powered devices.
To take advantage of forward-looking LED technology for the medical sector as well – e.g., laryngoscopes and otoscopes – 2E mechatronic uses so-called MID technology. MID is here an abbreviation of “Mechatronic Integrated Devices.” This innovative manufacturing technology has been used successfully in dental technology for many years and has revolutionized lighting applications in the treatment units of dentists.
The procedure is based on a plastic that has a special compound mixed in. The MID substrate is manufactured using plastic injection molding methods, followed by structuring with a laser. The conductor paths are produced by metallizing the laser-structured areas using an electroless process. First, a copper layer with a thickness of only 4-6 µm is applied, followed by a similarly thin nickel layer, and finally a flashgold layer that serves as corrosion protection.
To ensure the new lighting is compatible with various applications, it was equipped with a brass enclosure with UNC thread. The integrated constant power supply ensures uniform illumination over the entire battery life. A special lens system ensured optimal light focusing.
At the Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Clinic at the Herz-Jesu Hospital in Dernbach, the new LED elements were tested successfully already by 2E mechatronic. Chief physician Dr. Andreas Wechsung confirms: “The most important thing is that they are 100% compatible with the old halogen lights. This means handling the lights does not change. But the brass enclosure hides innovative technology in the smallest space and generates significant advantages such as low energy consumption and a long service life. Due to the employed technology, LEDs yield a high level of luminosity and are very reliable. The many innovative benefits thus make these lighting elements an economically interesting choice.”
